How to: Make an Epic Wall

I’ve been a bad friend haven’t I? Over a month since my last post….. hmmmm….

Will you still like me? Please? Oh come on, I’ll send you your favorite flowers! You know, those ones with the petals….

Gosh I am sad…. BUT enough of this grovelling! Let’s get to it!

FOR AN EPIC WALL:

You will need:

A dedicated portion of blank wall in a size fo your choice.

A simply wonderful collection of 2D objects of as much adored paraphernalia as your creative heart desires! This being said – manageable 3D objects such as coins, gift wrap bows and particularly intriguing lolly packages are also of course affectionately welcomed.

Blue tack – Oh so very much Blue tack. To the point where when you go shopping, the check out chick at the counter of your respective Blue Tack vendor has already dialled up the code for a new addition of prussian adhesive on the cash register before greeting you by your prefered nickname and engaging in some light banter regarding how Melbourne’s weather is astonishing us yet again. You’ll get used to this.

What to do:

As haphazardly as you like, begin to build up a comprehensive covering on the wall. Layering and tacking your beauties for all to see! As your vertical collection grows, a new or larger wallspace may be required.

But now I hear you ask! Where do I find all these presentables without paying money? Well it’s dead easy. Postcards (often there are some really wicked free ones in the city), concert tickets, nice looking business cards, cut out sections of gift wrap or patterned paper, favourite birthday cards, train tickets, newspaper cartoons are all cheap and easy starting points. All you need to do is keep your eyes out for them! Other ideas may include sketches – if you’re the arty kind, small, lightweight swatches of fabric or even sticky notes with favourite quotes.

I have not forgotten photos, and if there are some snappers that just never fail to bring a grin to your lips – then by alllll means, tack ‘em up! All I say is, photo walls have been around for some time, and these other interesting additions can make them something really special

The most important thing to remember is: This is YOUR Epic Wall, no one elses. Make it as customised and personalised as you want. Don’t hesitate to stick something up, you can take it down later if something else takes prioritising fancy. Also, if you don’t want it parading in the hallway for Aunty Sylvia to sniff and critique at when she ‘pops over’ on ‘those visits’, use a bedroom or study wallspace and enjoy it all for yourself!

Megan Washington and how to survive not going to Splendor in the Grass…

OKAY so, this weekend for all Queenslander musophiles it is of course time for the wonderful 3 day dream that is Splendor in the Grass. This year has a wonderous line up (Angus and Julia Stone, Bluejuice, Paul Kelly, Mumfor and Sons, Birds of Tokyo, Florence and teh Machine just to name a smattering) and I pay all my mucho-thanking-yous to Triple J for being nice enough to record the sets and play them all through this weekend. I for one will be spending several of the hours between 2-10pm tomorrow perched in front of my radio, absorbing like a sponge as i attempt to pretend to look like I’m doing homework. Indeed we do love live music, indeeeeed we do.

Oh yes! And Megan Washington, She is one awesome Australian, classically trained pianist, incredible vocals weilding songbird of the band Washington. Again, kudos to Triple J for directly introducing me to her (by directly I mean I heard her on the radio… but one can always dream!) Mum mentioned she has her first album (after 3 Ep’s out today; “I believe you, liar” – Do check it out or I’ll be sad, and so will Megan).

In the event that you are a northern hemisphere (or close enough) dweller and have the awesomness of Summer and actual WARM SUNSHINE (can you tell I’m having withdrawal symptoms?)… Here’s some tasty advice from Miss Washington herself: “Don’t get a tan, because a tan is a scar”

Hello again, again

Scroll down a tad, just a tad… and you’ll find yourself gazing at my last entry on this site. You read the date, the eyes pop out of your head and you realise ‘My golly gosh! That was a while ago!’
Indeed it was. So now we must fix

I’ve dusted the cobwebs off the curtains, turned on a bit of Sarah Blasko, flittered through the proverbial wardrobe of blog themes and picked out a new floral number for my the fishbowl’s rebirth. Any excuse will do….

Plenty has happened in plenty of places over the past nineteen months. Everywhere from countries all over the world to the humble other side of my kitchen window. These included a few failed attempts to reignite my WordPressing flame, but now my fingers are again properly hungry to trip the light fantastic over they keys and begin blogging!

Ah, well that time of year has swung around again, and for a fleeting 24 hours we can all come together with family, friends and neighbours and enjoy the Christmas spirit. Veggie Garden Diaries #1

I figured it is well and truely time to take down a nice new glossy diary from the shelf and begin to fill it to it’s brim with even more continous ramblings! So I said to myself: ‘self, yo should write about a veggie patch.’ so I am; well the beginnings of one anyway…

The other day we bought a selection of herb punnets from bunnings and this week we are planning to move them from the yellow tub on the sink and into the soil. It’s really a herb garden at the moment, but as they say, from little things, big things grow! Now we have Mint, Thyme, Sage, Oregano, Parsley and…. STRAWBERRIES! So I’m very happy. As I said, it’s just the beginning, but I think we will be in for a very tasty Summer!

Bird Nest Diaries #6

I must confess that this is definitely not the happiest post I will write. We haven’t seen any sign of mother bird since 9am-ish Saturday morning, as of now that is 5 or so days ago. It’s a shame that it all turned out this way but hopefully mother bird has built a new nest somewhere else, preferably high up in a nice tree somewhere.

So we carefully close the back cover of our bird nest diaries and place it on the bookshelf, and look forward to opening a new page next spring and welcoming a new family of feathered friends back into our garden.

Things have taken a slight turn, but were still hopeful.
Last night at about midnight, we heard a bit of a squawk and a rustle from the nest. It’s alright, the family are all ok, but we have a problem with the nest: The pile is drying out and therefore shrinking, so some of the branches supporting the nest are beginning to come unstuck and the nest is tilting.

This morning, while mother bird was out, we discovered that a small branch has also fallen over the nest along with a couple of leaves. This makes it hard for mum to sit on her eggs, so – without touching – we’ve used a twig to move the leaves and branch out of the way
so it’s all good again.

She came back for a while, but we haven’t seen her for a couple of hours, but we’re hoping for the best.

More eggs.

Just noticed that our little feathered friend has laid another speckled beauty. She’s got four children now, she’ll be busy in a few weeks.

Interestingly enough, no sign of Dadda bird; she seems to be a single parent. I feel a little sorry for her, she has to leave the nest whenever she goes to get food… but thankfully everything is still safe and well.

We have discovered eggs.

Mamma bird has laid 3 gorgeous blue speckled eggs for us to marvel over. She’s even made a little blanket of white fluffy down for the eggs to nestle in.

So far everything is safe and we can’t wait for the eggs to hatch!!!

Out of worry for our little winged mum, we’ve put a little fence-type thing around the outside of the pile to protect the nest and it’s precious cargo. The cats are going to need to be certified acrobats to get around this thing. Mum can fly in and out with ease though.
